The Austin Allegro, introduced in May 1973 by British Leyland, was envisioned as a modern successor to the popular Austin 1100/1300 series. Designed by Harris Mann, the Allegro featured front-wheel drive and innovative Hydragas suspension, aiming to provide a comfortable ride and contemporary styling.

Design and Features

The Allegro was available in various body styles, including two-door and four-door saloons, as well as a three-door estate.Engine options ranged from 1.0 to 1.7 litres, utilising both A-Series and E-Series engines. Notably, early models featured a distinctive “quartic” steering wheel—rectangular with rounded edges—intended to improve instrument visibility and legroom. However, this design was unpopular and was replaced with a conventional round steering wheel by 1975.

Performance and Reception

Despite its innovative features, the Allegro faced criticism for its styling and build quality. Early reviews highlighted issues with the gear change and handling, particularly in the 1750cc models. The Hydragas suspension, while advanced, was noted for causing excessive body movement. Additionally, the Allegro’s design was compromised by the need to accommodate existing components, leading to a bulbous appearance that deviated from Mann’s original sleek concept.

Legacy

Over its production run from 1973 to 1982, approximately 642,350 Allegros were built. While it was a common sight on British roads during the 1970s, the Allegro’s reputation suffered due to its design flaws and quality issues. Today, it is often cited as an example of British Leyland’s challenges during that era. Nevertheless, the Allegro remains a notable part of British automotive history, reflecting the industry’s ambitions and struggles in the 1970s.
