Racing Car Transporters
The Mercedes-Benz racing transporter known as the Blue Wonder was built in 1954 for the 1955 season, on a lengthened 300 S frame with a 300 SL engine, and could reach 170 km/h with a race car on board. Werk83 makes it in 1:18 with the Mercedes W196 in which Stirling Moss won the 1955 British Grand Prix at Aintree, his first Formula 1 victory. The real transporter is 6.75 metres long, so the model measures around 37cm, a substantial display piece.
Corgi's 1:48 Ecurie Ecosse transporter recreates the Scottish team's Commer-based double-decker, which carried one car inside and two on the upper deck. Corgi first introduced its model, number 1126, in October 1961, and it remains one of the best-known diecast models of the period.
Rally Assistance and Trailers
Otto Mobile's 1:18 three-piece set pairs a Fiat 242 assistance van and trailer with the Lancia 037 in which Walter Rohrl and Christian Geistdorfer won the 1983 Monte Carlo Rally, the 037's first world championship victory. It is a sealed resin limited edition. For collectors who want to build their own display, Solido's 1:24 flatbed transporter trailer is a diecast trailer sized for 1:24 cars.
Choosing a Scale
Transporters are large models: a 1:18 racing transporter can be close to 40cm long, so 1:43 and 1:48 are popular when space is limited. Our scale guide compares each size.
