About the Ferrari 330 TRI
The Ferrari 330 TRI/LM (Testa Rossa Indianapolis/Le Mans) was a one-off racing car developed by Ferrari in 1962. It was the final evolution of the Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa series and the last front-engined car to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, marking the end of an era as mid-engined designs became dominant.
Versions and Evolution
The 330 TRI/LM was an evolution of Ferrari’s successful 250 Testa Rossa models, specifically the 250 TRI/61, but with significant modifications:
- Engine: It was powered by a 4.0-litre (3967 cc) V12 engine, derived from the Ferrari 400 Superamerica road car, producing around 390 bhp.
- Chassis: The car used a modified 250 TRI/61 chassis, reinforced to handle the increased power.
- Aerodynamics: It featured a redesigned body, optimised for long-distance endurance racing.
- Transmission: The gearbox and suspension were also upgraded to cope with the additional stress.
The 330 TRI/LM was a unique car, with no direct “versions” beyond this single chassis, chassis number 0808, which was converted from a previous 250 TRI/61.
Achievements
- 1962 24 Hours of Le Mans: Driven by Phil Hill and Olivier Gendebien, the Ferrari 330 TRI/LM secured a dominant overall victory. This marked Ferrari’s third consecutive Le Mans win and was particularly historic as it was the last front-engined car to win Le Mans.
- It remained Ferrari’s most powerful and last Testa Rossa before mid-engine designs took over.
