The JH-7A Flying Leopard represents an advanced variant of the basic JH-7 model, designed to fulfill the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) need for an aircraft with enhanced precision strike capabilities. Developed by the 603 Institute in the mid-1990s with full-scale development starting in 1999, the JH-7A was a response to the Air Force and Navy’s requirements for a modern replacement for their aging H-5 and Q-5 fleets. First delivered to the PLA Naval Aviation in early 2004 and subsequently to the PLA Air Force later that year, the JH-7A features improvements such as the JL-10A pulse doppler radar, a fly-by-wire (FBW) flight control system, a one-piece windscreen, additional hardpoints, and the capability to deploy Laser-guided bombs (LGB) and Kh-31P anti-radiation missiles.
