Description

The 1985 Safari Rally, run over around 5,200km of Kenyan roads from 4 to 8 April, was Peugeot’s first serious attempt at Africa’s toughest event with the 205 Turbo 16. Peugeot Talbot Sport sent three heavily reinforced Evolution 1 cars for Ari Vatanen, Bruno Saby and Timo Salonen, each fitted with titanium underbody protection, an extra 80-litre fuel tank, bull bars, auxiliary lights and spare wheels. The rally proved chastening. All three cars suffered turbo problems and overheating dampers, Saby crashed out and Vatanen retired with a blown head gasket.

Salonen and co-driver Seppo Harjanne nursed their 205 to the finish in seventh place, the only works Peugeot to make it, nearly four hours behind Juha Kankkunen’s winning Toyota Celica. The points still counted, and Salonen went on to win the 1985 Drivers’ Championship while Peugeot took the Manufacturers’ title.

Otto Mobile has recreated the night version of Salonen’s number 6 Peugeot 205 T16 from the 1985 Safari Rally in 1:18 scale. The sealed resin model captures the Safari-specific equipment, including the bull bar and auxiliary lighting, along with the white Peugeot Talbot Sport livery and sponsor graphics. An officially licensed, individually numbered limited edition of 2,000 pieces.
