Billy Coleman from Cork is one of Irish rallying’s great names. He was crowned British Rally Champion in 1974 and won the Donegal International Rally for the first time in 1977 in a Lancia Stratos. In 1985 Dave Richards offered him a Rothmans-backed Porsche 911 SC RS, and in 1986 Prodrive and Rothmans gave him an MG Metro 6R4. Coleman used it to win both the Donegal and the Cork 20 rallies that year.
At the 1986 Shell Donegal International Rally, a tarmac event based in Letterkenny, Coleman and co-driver Ronan Morgan started at No.1 in the Rothmans Rally Team Metro and took the overall win. James Cullen’s Nissan 240RS was second and Cyril Bolton’s 6R4 third. The 6R4 was built for this kind of road. Developed by Austin Rover with Williams Grand Prix Engineering, it used a 3.0-litre naturally aspirated V6 behind the front seats, drove all four wheels and produced more than 410bhp in international form. Coleman stepped back from top-level rallying after a BMW M3 engine failure on the 1987 Circuit of Ireland, which makes the 1986 Donegal win one of the highlights of his later career.
Sun Star’s 1:18 diecast model recreates the white and blue Rothmans car, registration C869 EUD, with Shell and Dunlop branding. The doors, front compartment and rear engine cover open to show the cockpit and the mid-mounted V6, and the model has working suspension. It is limited to 999 pieces.
