Description

Walter Röhrl’s victory at the 1982 Monte Carlo Rally in the Opel Ascona 400 was one of the defining results of a career that many consider the greatest in the history of rallying. The Monte Carlo — with its combination of tarmac mountain passes above Monaco, unpredictable winter weather, and the need to manage tyre choices across stages that could transition from dry to icy within a single special — suited Röhrl’s precise, analytical approach perfectly. He and co-driver Christian Geistdörfer had mastered the event’s demands, and the Rothmans-liveried Opel Ascona 400 provided the mechanical platform to translate that mastery into victory.

The Ascona 400 was Opel’s Group 4 homologation special — its rear-wheel-drive chassis, fuel-injected 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine, and the engineering attention of the works programme making it genuinely competitive in the early Group B era. The “Night Version” captures the car equipped for the Monte Carlo’s renowned night stages — additional lighting and the rally specification that confronted the darkness of the Alpine passes at competition pace.
