Description

The 1979 French Grand Prix at Dijon-Prenois occupies a unique place in Formula 1 history — it was the race in which Jean-Pierre Jabouille gave Renault and the turbocharged engine its first Grand Prix victory, a moment that signalled the end of the naturally aspirated era. But the finish of the race produced something equally memorable: a wheel-to-wheel battle for second and third position between René Arnoux in the sister Renault and Gilles Villeneuve in the Ferrari 312T4 that unfolded over the final laps with an intensity and commitment that has rarely been matched. Cars touched, positions swapped, and the pair raced each other at the absolute limit of what was possible with 1970s machinery on a short, demanding circuit.

Arnoux crossed the line in third position, Villeneuve second — a result that seemed almost secondary to what the two drivers had produced in the closing stages. The No. 16 Renault RS12 was part of a pivotal moment for the sport, both as confirmation of turbo power’s potential and as the setting for one of racing’s most celebrated duels.
