Description

The BMW Alpina E21 C1 2.3 sits at an interesting intersection of everyday usability and genuine performance ambition. Alpina — a factory-endorsed tuner with a long and well-regarded relationship with BMW — took the E21 3 Series platform and sharpened it considerably, enlarging the engine to 2.3 litres and refining the suspension and aerodynamics to suit. The result was a car with noticeably more pace and composure than the standard 3 Series, but without the harshness that came with many performance conversions of the period.

By 1980 the E21 Alpinas had developed a strong following among drivers who wanted something with genuine driver appeal but didn’t feel the need to shout about it. The C1 2.3 in red has exactly that quiet purposefulness — restrained from a distance, but with enough presence up close to make its intentions clear.

Solido’s 1:18 recreation is a solid representation of the car at an accessible price point. Opening doors, working wheels and an included display base make it a decent shelf piece.
