Golf GTI and Golf R Model Cars
The Golf GTI went on sale in Germany in June 1976 with a 110 PS 1.6-litre engine, and almost every generation since has been modelled. Otto Mobile makes the Golf GTI Mk1 Group 2 rally car driven by Per Eklund on the 1980 Monte Carlo Rally, the Golf V GTI Edition 30 and the Mk8 GTI in red. The Edition 30 was built for the GTI's 30th anniversary in 2006, with one extra PS for every year of the GTI, giving 230 PS. Norev covers the Golf II from 1989 and the Golf IV GTI from 1998 in diecast. The R badge first appeared on the 2002 Golf R32, and Otto Mobile has modelled the Golf 7.5 R Oettinger in Tornado Red. A Mk8 Golf is about 4.28 metres long, so a 1:18 model measures around 24cm and a 1:12 model around 36cm.
T1 Kombi, Samba and Commercials
The Type 2 Transporter entered production in March 1950, and the deluxe Samba with its roof windows followed in 1951. Otto Mobile has produced the Combi T1 Samba in Regatta Blue in 1:12. Solido produces its modern Kool Kombi in Gulf colours and black and red, plus a green 1950 Kombi and a T1 Pick-Up in Ikea livery, all in 1:18 diecast. Schuco adds a 1:18 resin T1 advertising van in Schwabisch Hall colours, and Norev's 2003 California camper suits collectors of later Transporters. Solido has also made the 1982 Caddy Mk1 pick-up in M Racing tribute colours.
Polo, Scirocco and Modern Volkswagens
Otto Mobile also makes the 2001 Polo GTI, the 2008 Scirocco R and the 2024 Tiguan eTSI R-Line, all sealed resin limited editions, as well as the 1:12 Golf III VR6. In 1:64, Mini GT pairs an ID. Buzz with a Porsche 911 Dakar in a trailer set.
Resin or Diecast
Otto Mobile and Schuco resin models are sealed, with no opening doors or bonnet, which keeps the body lines sharp and allows short production runs of less common cars. Solido and Norev diecast models are heavier, and many have opening parts. Our scale guide explains each size in more detail.
