Description
Produced by Sun Star in 1:18 scale, this limited-edition diecast model replicates the #18 MG Metro 6R4 campaigned by Ray Breen with co-driver Sean Hassett at Rallylegend 2019 in San Marino. The model is finished in diecast metal with plastic detail parts and features opening doors, an opening engine cover revealing the mid-mounted V6, functioning suspension and rolling wheels. A separate headlight pod accessory is supplied, allowing the car to be displayed with the covers in place or removed for rally specification. The edition is limited to 999 pieces and is officially licensed, measuring approximately 21cm in length.
The MG Metro 6R4 was developed by Austin Rover Motorsport with input from Williams Grand Prix Engineering as Britain’s challenger for Group B rallying. Unlike its turbocharged rivals, the 6R4 used a bespoke 3.0-litre naturally aspirated V6 designated V64V — a quad-cam, 24-valve design — driving all four wheels. In full Group B specification the engine produced around 410bhp at 9,000rpm, while the 200 homologation ‘Clubman’ cars built between August and October 1985 were detuned to roughly 250bhp. The car’s best World Championship result was Tony Pond and Rob Arthur’s third place on the 1985 Lombard RAC Rally. Group B was banned at the end of the 1986 season following a series of fatal accidents, after which many 6R4s went on to long second careers in rallycross and national rallying, where examples such as this one continue to appear at historic events today.
