Description

The Mazda 787B’s victory at the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans is one of the most remarkable results in the history of motor racing — the first and, to this day, only outright Le Mans win for a Japanese manufacturer, achieved with a naturally aspirated four-rotor Wankel rotary engine at a time when the circuit’s long straights appeared to favour the turbocharged opposition. Volker Weidler, Johnny Herbert, and Bertrand Gachot shared the No. 55 car through the full 24-hour distance, the rotary’s extraordinary high-pitched howl echoing through the night at the Circuit de la Sarthe in a way that no piston engine could replicate and that those who were there have never forgotten.

The significance of the three drivers extends beyond Le Mans itself. Herbert had rebuilt his career after suffering severe leg injuries at Brands Hatch in 1988 that many feared would end his time in motorsport; his Le Mans victory was a vindication of remarkable resilience. Gachot’s story took a darker turn in the weeks after the race when his imprisonment following an altercation with a London taxi driver created the vacancy at Jordan that gave Michael Schumacher his Formula 1 debut — an irony that places the 1991 Le Mans at the centre of one of the sport’s most consequential chain of events. The 787B’s Renown-liveried orange, green, and yellow colour scheme has become as iconic as the victory itself.

WERK83’s 1:12 diecast model captures the winning car at approximately 40cm in length — a scale that gives full expression to the 787B’s low, purposeful proportions. Openable doors and working wheels complete a model that does justice to one of motorsport’s most extraordinary chapters.

Understanding Scale

The scale of a model is its size as a proportion to the real-life item. For instance, a 1:18 scale model means that every 1 unit of measurement on the model equals 18 units on the real item. If you divide the real item's size by 18, you'd get the size of the 1:18 model. Please note that models can vary slightly in size, as not all real-life items, like cars or planes, have the same dimensions.

Model Cars:

  • 1:12 scale: ~38 cm or 15 inches
  • 1:18 scale: ~25 cm or 10 inches
  • 1:24 scale: ~18 cm or 7 inches
  • 1:43 scale: ~10 cm or 4 inches
  • 1:64 scale: ~7 cm or 2.75 inches
  • 1:76 scale: ~6 cm or 2.3 inches

Model Trucks:

  • 1:12 scale: ~75 cm or 29.5 inches
  • 1:18 scale: ~50 cm or 19.7 inches
  • 1:24 scale: ~38 cm or 15 inches
  • 1:43 scale: ~21 cm or 8.3 inches
  • 1:64 scale: ~14 cm or 5.5 inches
  • 1:76 scale: ~12 cm or 4.7 inches

Model Bikes:

  • 1:6 scale: ~30 cm or 12 inches
  • 1:10 scale: ~18 cm or 7 inches
  • 1:12 scale: ~15 cm or 6 inches
