The Lotus 97T was designed for 1985 by a team led by Gérard Ducarouge, with Martin Ogilvie as chief designer. Its carbon-fibre monocoque carried a 1.5-litre Renault Gordini turbocharged V6, and the car introduced early bargeboards between the front wheels and sidepods, while winglets on the trailing edges of the sidepods recovered downforce lost to the ban on rear-wing winglets. In the hands of Ayrton Senna and Elio de Angelis it took three wins and eight pole positions, seven of them for Senna.
The Portuguese Grand Prix at Estoril on 21 April 1985 was only Senna’s second race for Lotus. He took his first Formula 1 pole by 0.413 seconds from Alain Prost, then led every lap in torrential rain while many of his rivals spun off, Prost among them. The race was stopped after 67 of the scheduled 70 laps when it reached the two-hour limit. Senna won by 1 minute 2.978 seconds from Michele Alboreto’s Ferrari, lapped everyone else and set the fastest lap. It was the first of his 41 Grand Prix victories.
WERK83 reproduces Senna’s No.12 in the black and gold John Player Special livery in the large 1:8 scale, approximately 53cm long and 27cm wide, with an authentic cockpit replica, a detailed engine compartment, an opening bonnet and turning front wheels. The decals are already applied, and the model comes with a separate display case and a scale mini helmet in Senna’s original design.
