Ayrton Senna’s first Grand Prix victory came at Estoril on 21 April 1985, in only his second race for Lotus. He took the first pole position of his career with a lap of 1:21.007, then led every lap of a race run in torrential rain, setting the fastest lap and finishing 1 minute 2.978 seconds ahead of Michele Alboreto’s Ferrari. Every other car was lapped at least once, and the race was halted at its two-hour limit after 67 of the scheduled 70 laps.
The Lotus 97T was designed under technical director Gérard Ducarouge, with a carbon-fibre monocoque, Renault turbocharged V6 power and early bargeboards between the front wheels and sidepods. In 1985 it won three Grands Prix and took eight pole positions, seven of them Senna’s.
This WERK83 kit lets you build the Estoril-winning car yourself in large 1:8 scale, approximately 53cm long when complete, based on the original car and the original designs preserved by Classic Team Lotus. The build combines die-cast metal with detailed plastic and mechanical components that are bolted or snapped together; the parts come pre-painted and sponsor decals are included. The finished model features a removable engine cover over a faithful replica Renault EF4 engine, steerable front wheels, an authentic cockpit and Goodyear rubber tyres. The difficulty level is medium to hard, and a separate display case is supplied.
