Description

Stefan Bellof and Derek Bell were one of the defining driver pairings of 1980s endurance racing — a combination of Bell’s vast experience and measured brilliance with Bellof’s extraordinary natural speed and fearless commitment that proved devastating in the Porsche 956 across multiple championships and circuits. Their victory in the No. 2 Porsche 956K at the 1000km of Sandown Park in 1984 was part of a season in which the German-British partnership demonstrated just how complete a racing combination they were, the 956K’s ground-effect aerodynamics and turbocharged power perfectly suited to the Australian circuit’s demands.

Bellof’s career was cut tragically short at Spa-Francorchamps in September 1985, leaving a legacy of results and performances — including the Nürburgring lap record that stood for over three decades — that confirmed him as one of the fastest and most gifted drivers of his generation. Bell’s subsequent career added further Le Mans victories and enduring recognition as one of endurance racing’s all-time greats. Their 1984 Sandown victory is among the results that defined the 956K’s dominance of the World Sports Car Championship era.
