Description

The Mazda 787B’s victory at the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans remains the most improbable and extraordinary result in the race’s modern history — the only win by a rotary-engined car at La Sarthe, and to this day the sole outright Le Mans victory by a Japanese manufacturer. The four-rotor 26B engine’s distinctive, almost mechanical screech set the 787B apart from every other car in the field on sound alone, its high-revving rotary power delivering around 700hp through a package that the Mazda engineering team and its drivers — Volker Weidler, Johnny Herbert, and Bertrand Gachot — managed across the full 24 hours with growing confidence as the more fancied Jaguar and Mercedes entries encountered difficulties.

Herbert, who would go on to a Formula 1 career that included race victories, brought his exceptional car control to the occasion; Gachot, Belgian-born and one of the most cosmopolitan figures in international racing of the period, completed a three-driver combination of genuine depth and talent. The 787B’s iconic orange and green Renown livery made it one of the most visually distinctive winners in Le Mans history.
