Description

The Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa was one of the most successful and most beautiful sports prototype racers of its era — a 3.0-litre V12 machine that took Ferrari to Le Mans victory in 1958, 1960, and 1961, the “Red Head” name referring to the distinctive red-painted cam covers that distinguished the engine visually as well as sonically. NART — the North American Racing Team, established by Ferrari’s American importer Luigi Chinetti — was among the most active and well-regarded private Ferrari racing operations of the period, bringing factory-standard machinery to events across North America and, crucially, to Le Mans, where Chinetti’s entries carried the ambitions of American and North American drivers to the world’s greatest endurance race.

John Fulp and Peter Ryan shared the No. 18 NART-entered Ferrari 250 TR61 at the 1962 24 Hours — Ryan a young Canadian of considerable promise whose life was cut tragically short later that season. Their entry was part of a Le Mans dominated by Ferrari machinery across multiple categories and team affiliations, the Testa Rossa’s V12 soundtrack one of the defining sounds of the Circuit de la Sarthe in those years.
