Description

The Ford Escort XR3i Cabriolet occupies a particular place in the social history of 1980s Britain — a car whose combination of open-top style, hot hatch performance, and relative accessibility made it one of the defining choices of the decade. The Cabriolet was engineered by Karmann in Germany, who took the three-door Escort bodyshell and developed a folding hood arrangement that preserved the car’s structural integrity while opening the cabin to the elements. The result was one of the more thoroughly sorted open-top cars available in the class, its 1.6-litre fuel-injected CVH engine delivering the performance the XR3i badge promised whether the roof was raised or lowered.
