Description

The XR badge on a Ford Escort carried genuine meaning through the 1980s — a designation that signified a car built for drivers, with firmer suspension, a more potent engine, and a visual identity that set it apart from the workaday versions sharing its underpinnings. The XR3i Cabriolet extended that proposition into open-top motoring, the Karmann-engineered folding hood giving the car a versatility that the fixed-roof XR3i could not offer, at the cost of some structural rigidity the engineers worked hard to minimise. The 1.6-litre CVH engine with fuel injection responded well to the open-road conditions that Cabriolet drivers inevitably sought out.

Sunburst Red was among the most naturally suited colours for the XR3i Cabrio — bright, emphatic, and entirely consistent with the car’s character as a machine intended to be driven with some enthusiasm and noticed in the process. Sun Star’s 1:18 diecast model captures the right-hand-drive Cabriolet at approximately 25cm in length with openable doors, bonnet, and boot, working wheels and suspension, and display base. Officially licensed.
