Description

The Fiat 131 Abarth was the dominant force in World Rally Championship competition in the late 1970s — a purpose-built rally weapon that claimed the manufacturers’ title in 1977, 1978, and 1980, and which produced some of the most exciting and committed driving the sport has ever seen. With its twin-cam turbocharged engine, purpose-developed suspension, and the deep engineering resources of Fiat’s factory programme behind it, the 131 Abarth gave its drivers a car capable of winning on virtually every surface the WRC calendar threw at it.

Markku Alén was one of the great Scandinavian rally drivers of his generation — a Finn of extraordinary aggression and natural speed who made the Fiat 131 Abarth his own with a series of performances that demonstrated both his talent and the car’s formidable capability. His victory at the 1978 Rally de Portugal was part of a campaign that saw the 131 Abarth at the very height of its powers, the combination of Alén’s commitment and Fiat’s engineering producing results that cemented the car’s place among the most successful rally cars ever built.
