Description

The Highland Green 1968 Ford Mustang GT 390 Fastback driven by Steve McQueen as Lieutenant Frank Bullitt through the hills of San Francisco is the most celebrated movie car in American cinema — the centrepiece of a chase sequence that runs for nearly ten minutes and which set a standard for filmed automotive action that has never been surpassed. Director Peter Yates and stunt coordinator Carey Loftin shot the chase without musical accompaniment, letting the sounds of the 390 cubic-inch V8, the Dodge Charger in pursuit, and the tyres on San Francisco’s undulating streets carry the entire sequence. The result was something entirely new in cinema and entirely unrepeatable.

McQueen’s connection to the car was genuine — he could drive, he understood machinery, and the intensity he brought to the chase scenes reflected a real relationship between man and car that no amount of editing could have fabricated. The Mustang’s satin green finish, its long bonnet, and the purposeful simplicity of the fastback body have made it one of the most visually iconic objects in American popular culture, recognised instantly by anyone who has ever seen the film.
