Description

The Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith was produced from 1946 to 1959 as a coachbuilt chassis — a rolling platform of the finest engineering available, delivered to the coachbuilder of the buyer’s choosing for the addition of a bespoke body. This arrangement had defined Rolls-Royce production for decades before the war and continued in the Silver Wraith’s case long after standardised bodywork had become the norm for almost every other manufacturer. Hooper and Co. was among the most distinguished of the coachbuilders that worked with the Silver Wraith chassis, their craftsmanship representing the very top of a trade in which hand-finishing and individual attention were considered minimum standards rather than aspirational goals.

The Empress body style was among Hooper’s most recognisable and formal offerings — a design of pronounced elegance and considerable length that communicated the status of its occupants through restraint rather than ostentation. The two-tone Brown and Gold finish of this 1956 example is a combination of warmth and refinement that suited the Empress body’s proportions particularly well, the contrasting colours articulating the coachwork’s flowing lines and separating the upper and lower sections of the bodywork with a jeweller’s precision. MCG’s 1:18 sealed diecast model captures the car at approximately 30cm in length with rollable wheels.
