Description

The Silver Wraith chassis, offered by Rolls-Royce as the basis for bespoke coachbuilt bodywork through the 1950s, attracted the most accomplished coachbuilders in Britain — firms whose workshops in London and the home counties carried forward traditions of hand craftsmanship that stretched back to the carriage trade. Hooper, established in the early nineteenth century and by the 1950s one of the last of the great independents still producing work of this quality, built the Empress body to a standard that reflected both the chassis it sat upon and the expectations of the clientele who ordered it. Every Empress was, in the most complete sense of the phrase, a one-off — a car built for a specific person, to their specification, with no expense spared and no shortcut taken.

In Black over Blue, the 1956 Empress presents with a formal authority that makes the Brown and Gold sister car look comparatively warm and approachable — this is a car for arrival, for occasion, for state rather than leisure. The two colours meet at a precisely drawn division that runs the length of the body, the darker upper section anchoring the design above the contrasting lower panels. Hooper closed their coachbuilding operation in 1959, making this era of their work — the final chapter of one of Britain’s great craft industries — particularly significant. MCG’s 1:18 sealed diecast model captures the Empress at approximately 30cm in length with rollable wheels.
