Description

The BMW E36 Cabriolet is one of the most elegantly resolved open-top cars of the 1990s — a four-seater convertible that managed the difficult balance between genuine usability and genuine desirability with greater success than almost any rival of its era. Where many cabriolets of the period compromised structural rigidity or rear passenger space in pursuit of open-air appeal, the E36 Cabriolet was engineered with the same seriousness that BMW brought to its saloons and coupés, offering a fully lined hood, a rigid body that remained free of scuttle shake, and the kind of build quality that rewarded owners who kept their cars for years rather than seasons.

The 318i brought the cabriolet’s sophisticated package to a broader audience — a four-cylinder entry point into a model line that extended to the six-cylinder 325i and 328i, yet which lost nothing of the car’s essential character in the process.
