Description
The 1966 Ford Thunderbird convertible is one of cinema’s most iconic road trip cars — the vehicle that Thelma and Louise take on their fateful journey in Ridley Scott’s 1991 film, the car’s open-top freedom and distinctly American scale giving the road trip a visual language as wide and unencumbered as the landscape they drive through. The fourth-generation Thunderbird had evolved from the original two-seat sports car into a large, luxurious personal car, its long bonnet, sweeping curves, and fold-down soft-top embodying a particular idea of American automotive freedom.
In Light Blue Metallic, the Thunderbird’s presence on screen is immediate — a colour that suits the open road and the film’s visual palette of wide Western skies. The ending of Thelma & Louise, in which the car and its occupants take to the air at the edge of the Grand Canyon, remains one of cinema’s most discussed conclusions.
