Description
The ten-minute chase sequence through the streets of San Francisco in Peter Yates’s 1968 film Bullitt is the most celebrated piece of automotive cinema ever filmed — a relentless, visceral pursuit through the city’s steep hills and sweeping freeways that set a standard no subsequent car chase has definitively surpassed. The car at its centre, a 1968 Ford Mustang 390 GT Fastback in Highland Green driven by Steve McQueen’s Lieutenant Frank Bullitt, became in those ten minutes the definitive American performance car of its era: understated in colour, purposeful in character, and apparently impossible to shake.
McQueen, a committed and highly capable racing driver, performed much of his own driving during the sequence — a fact visible on screen in the quality and commitment of what unfolds. Two Mustangs were used during production; one was damaged beyond repair during filming, while the surviving hero car disappeared from public knowledge for decades before resurfacing in private ownership. The Highland Green paint — rendered here as Matt Green, capturing the colour’s characteristic flat, dark quality — has since become one of the most imitated and celebrated finishes in American car culture.
