Description

The Panavia Tornado GR1A was the dedicated tactical reconnaissance variant of the Tornado, operated exclusively by No. II (Army Cooperation) Squadron — one of the RAF’s oldest and most distinguished units, with a lineage stretching back to the First World War. Where the standard GR1 carried bombs and missiles, the GR1A was equipped with an internal sideways-looking infrared reconnaissance system, giving it a covert intelligence-gathering capability that proved invaluable throughout its service life, most notably during the Gulf War of 1991.

ZA371 is shown wearing the distinctive winter camouflage scheme applied to No. II Squadron aircraft during their 1995 deployment to Norway — an oversnow white scheme overlaid on the standard grey/green that transformed the Tornado’s appearance dramatically and reflected the practical demands of operating in Arctic conditions. It is among the most visually striking liveries ever worn by a RAF Tornado, and a scheme rarely seen on scale models.
