Description

The Ferrari 156 F1 — universally known as the “Sharknose” for its distinctive twin-nostril nose — was one of the most beautiful and effective Formula 1 cars ever built. Arriving for the 1961 season when the regulations changed to 1.5-litre engines, Ferrari had prepared methodically while many British teams scrambled to adapt, and the result was a season of comprehensive Ferrari dominance. The 156’s V6 engine, its handling balance, and the quality of the drivers Ferrari assembled — Phil Hill, Wolfgang von Trips, Richie Ginther — gave the team advantages at virtually every circuit on the calendar.

Wolfgang von Trips won the British Grand Prix at Aintree as part of a season in which he and Phil Hill contested the championship between themselves. Von Trips’ two victories — Britain and the Netherlands — placed him at the front of the title fight until the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, where he was tragically killed in an accident that also took the lives of 14 spectators. Hill clinched the championship at the same race, in circumstances that brought no joy. The British GP win represents von Trips at the height of his powers — a German driver in red at one of the sport’s most important occasions. CMR’s 1:18 diecast model captures the winning 156 at approximately 22cm in length with a highly detailed sealed bodyshell.
