Description

The Bugatti Type 57 Atlantic is widely regarded as the most beautiful car ever made — a judgement that, for once, commands something close to universal agreement among automotive historians, collectors, and designers. Jean Bugatti’s masterpiece was built in just four examples between 1936 and 1938, its extraordinary aluminium body distinguished by the signature dorsal fin that runs from nose to tail, a feature born of necessity rather than pure styling: the duralumin alloy used for the body panels could not be welded without warping, so the seams were riveted instead, and the fin was designed to conceal them. The result is one of the most arresting silhouettes in automotive history.

The SC designation denotes the supercharged version of the Type 57’s 3.3-litre twin-cam straight-eight engine — already a sophisticated and powerful unit by the standards of the late 1930s, the addition of a Roots-type supercharger elevating performance to genuinely exceptional levels for the period. Of the four Atlantics built, two survive in major collections where they represent among the most valuable motor cars in the world. In black, Solido’s 1:18 diecast model presents the Atlantic at its most dramatic — the monochromatic finish emphasising the sweeping curves and riveted surfaces that make this one of the most recognisable shapes in automotive design.
