Overview
The Mini John Cooper Works GP2, launched in 2012, is the ultimate performance version of the second-generation Mini Hatch (R56). It followed in the footsteps of the original 2006 Mini Cooper S Works GP (R53) and was produced as a limited-edition, track-focused variant celebrating Miniโs motorsport heritage and engineering collaboration with John Cooper Works.
Built by Miniโs Oxford plant and fine-tuned at the BMW Nรผrburgring test centre, the GP2 was designed as the fastest, most hardcore Mini of its time. Only 2,000 units were produced globally, with approximately 288 units allocated to the UK, making it highly collectible among Mini enthusiasts.
Performance
The GP2 retained the 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine (code N18) found in the standard Mini John Cooper Works, but tuned to deliver sharper performance and improved cooling.
- Power Output: 218 PS (215 bhp) at 6,000 rpm
- Torque: 260 Nm (192 lb-ft), rising toย 280 Nm (206 lb-ft)ย on overboost
- Transmission: 6-speed manual gearbox
- Drivetrain: Front-wheel drive
Performance figures are impressive:
- 0โ100 km/h in 6.3 seconds
- Top speed of 242 km/h (150 mph)
The GP2 was capable of lapping the Nรผrburgring Nordschleife in 8 minutes 23 seconds, faster than many contemporary sports cars, underlining its track capability.
Design
The GP2โs design made it instantly recognisable as something special within the Mini line-up.
- Exterior: Finished exclusively inย Thunder Grey Metallicย withย Chili Redย accents andย GP-specific graphics, including a large number โGPโ decal on the doors and unique rear wing.
- Aero and Chassis: The body featured bespoke front and rear bumpers, a larger roof spoiler, rear diffuser, and underbody airflow enhancements.
- Wheels: Lightweight 17-inchย GP-specific alloysย wrapped in high-performanceย 215/40 R17 Kumho Ecsta tyres, co-developed with Mini for this model.
- Interior: Stripped for weight saving โ theย rear seats were removed, replaced by aย red aluminium cross brace, while the front featuredย Recaro sports seats, GP stitching, and Alcantara trim on the steering wheel and gear lever.
The design balanced aggressive motorsport intent with Miniโs distinctive style and attention to detail.
Driving Technology
The GP2 featured a range of performance-oriented technologies and hardware upgrades beyond the standard JCW model:
- Suspension: Fully adjustableย coilover suspensionย byย KW Automotive, allowing drivers to fine-tune ride height, camber, and damping settings for track use.
- Brakes: High-performanceย Brembo four-piston front brakesย for improved stopping power.
- Electronic Systems: Revisedย Dynamic Stability Control (DSC)ย with a dedicatedย GP mode, offering reduced intervention for experienced drivers.
- Weight Reduction: Overย 50 kg lighterย than a standard JCW due to the removal of the rear seats and other non-essential comfort features.
The result was a Mini that delivered exceptional precision and grip, offering one of the purest driving experiences in the hot hatch segment.
Heritage and Development
The GP2 is the spiritual successor to the 2006 Mini Cooper S Works GP (R53), which also featured a limited global run of 2,000 units. The GP2 took that formula โ lightweight, driver-focused, and exclusive โ and modernised it for the turbocharged era.
Extensive testing at the Nรผrburgring Nordschleife ensured the GP2 offered track-level performance while maintaining real-world drivability. Each car was hand-numbered, though not sequentially, with a small plaque denoting its unique identity.
Place in the Mini Line-up
The JCW GP2 sat above the standard John Cooper Works in performance and rarity. It represented the pinnacle of Mini engineering before the release of the third-generation F56 JCW GP (GP3) in 2020.
With its blend of light weight, mechanical grip, and raw turbocharged power, the GP2 remains one of the most driver-focused Minis ever produced โ a car revered by enthusiasts for its purity and limited production.
