Overview

The Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM AMG is one of the most exclusive and extreme road cars ever produced by AMG. Built in 2004, it was created to celebrate Mercedes-AMG’s success in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM)championship, where the CLK racing car dominated the series.

Only 100 coupes (and later 80 convertibles) were built, making it one of the rarest Mercedes-AMG models ever. The CLK DTM AMG combined motorsport-derived engineering with dramatic styling and immense power, offering performance levels that were astonishing for its era.

Performance

Under the bonnet lies a 5.4-litre supercharged V8 engine (M113K), hand-built by AMG engineers and tuned specifically for this car.

  • Power Output: 582 PS (574 bhp) at 6,100 rpm
  • Torque: 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) at 3,500 rpm
  • Transmission: 5-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT automatic
  • Drivetrain: Rear-wheel drive

Performance figures were staggering for 2004:

  • 0–100 km/h in 3.9 seconds
  • Top speed limited to 320 km/h (199 mph)

The CLK DTM AMG produced more power and torque than most contemporary supercars, positioning it as a true performance icon.

Design

The CLK DTM AMG was directly inspired by the DTM race car and featured extensive aerodynamic modifications.

  • Exterior: Wider carbon-fibre bodywork, flared wheel arches, deep front splitter, large fixed rear wing, and aggressive diffuser. These elements were not just for show – they provided real aerodynamic benefits and high-speed stability.
  • Wheels: Lightweight 19-inch front and 20-inch rear alloy wheels fitted with high-performance tyres.
  • Interior: The cabin reflected AMG’s racing heritage, with carbon-fibre bucket seats, Alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, and minimalist design. Rear seats were removed to save weight, replaced by a structural cross-brace for added rigidity.

Each interior was finished by hand, with exposed carbon and high-grade leather emphasising the car’s dual character: race-bred yet luxurious.

Driving Technology

Although based on the road-going CLK, the DTM AMG shared much of its philosophy with the race car:

  • Suspension: Fully re-engineered with a stiffer track setup, racing dampers, and lowered ride height.
  • Braking System: Large AMG high-performance brakes for exceptional stopping power.
  • Stability & Traction: ESP tuned for high-speed handling, allowing experienced drivers greater control at the limit.
  • Chassis: Reinforced with carbon components to manage the additional power and lateral forces.

Despite its race-inspired focus, the CLK DTM AMG retained a degree of refinement typical of Mercedes-Benz, making it drivable both on track and road.

Heritage and Inspiration

The CLK DTM AMG was built to commemorate Mercedes’ championship-winning CLK DTM race car, which dominated the early 2000s in the German touring car series.

Its road-going version was intended as a celebration of AMG’s motorsport expertise — a car that captured the thrill of the DTM in a street-legal package. Celebrities such as Formula 1 drivers Jenson Button and Juan Pablo Montoya were among the owners, drawn by its exclusivity and raw performance.

Place in the AMG Line-up

The 2004 CLK DTM AMG occupies a special place in AMG’s history. It was one of the first limited-run models built entirely by AMG as a standalone manufacturer before Mercedes-AMG became an integrated brand.

It set the precedent for future AMG halo cars such as the SLR McLaren 722C63 Black Series, and AMG GT Black Series, combining racing DNA with road-going luxury.

Even today, the CLK DTM AMG remains highly sought after by collectors, admired for its rarity, mechanical purity, and brutal performance.
