Description

Few television cars have achieved the cultural status of the Ferrari 308 GTS driven by Thomas Magnum in the CBS series that ran from 1980 to 1988. Tom Selleck’s portrayal of the Hawaiian-based private investigator gave the car a weekly audience of millions, and the sight of the red 308 GTS threading through Oahu’s roads — technically belonging to the unseen millionaire Robin Masters rather than Magnum himself — made the mid-engined Ferrari one of the most recognisable and coveted cars of the decade. The association between Selleck, the Hawaiian setting, and the 308 GTS is so complete that it remains impossible to see one without the other coming to mind.

The GTS designation denotes the targa-roofed version of Pininfarina’s celebrated 308 design — the removable roof panel that allowed Magnum to drive open to the Hawaiian sun being an intrinsic part of the car’s on-screen character. Ferrari’s 3.0-litre V8, mounted transversely amidships, gave the 308 GTS a combination of performance and mid-engined handling balance that made it genuinely special, and the red bodywork in tropical sunshine remains one of television’s most enduring visual signatures.
