Description

The Porsche 916 is one of the most intriguing and elusive cars the company ever produced — a project so promising it was cancelled precisely because it was too good. Developed in the early 1970s as a high-performance evolution of the mid-engined 914/6, the 916 received the 2.4-litre flat-six engine from the 911S, wider bodywork with flared arches, a fixed steel roof in place of the 914’s removable targa panel, and a significantly sharper driving character. Ferry Porsche and the development team were reportedly delighted with it — but Ferdinand Piëch intervened, concerned that the 916 would cannibalise sales of the flagship 911. The project was terminated after only a handful of prototypes were completed.

Chassis 17 is among the last of these survivors — a rare and historically significant example of a Porsche that never was. In Blue, it is a striking reminder of the road not taken.
