Description

The 1955 24 Hours of Le Mans was one of the most dramatic and sorrowful events in motorsport history. The catastrophic accident in which Pierre Levegh’s Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR was launched into the spectator enclosures resulted in the deaths of more than 80 people and fundamentally changed the conversation around circuit safety in motor racing. Mercedes-Benz withdrew from the race; other entries retired. Jaguar, after consultation, chose to continue, and their No. 6 D-Type Longnose, shared by Mike Hawthorn and Ivor Bueb, ultimately crossed the line first to take the outright victory — a result that brought no celebration in the shadow of the tragedy that had unfolded around it.

Hawthorn had been one of the fastest men in endurance racing as well as Formula 1, and the D-Type Longnose was the finest sports car Jaguar had ever built, its aerodynamic long nose, monocoque construction, and developed XK engine perfectly suited to the demands of the Sarthe circuit. The Le Mans win stands as both a sporting achievement and an inextricable part of the most difficult chapter in the race’s long history.
