Description

No racing car carries a more potent or more tragic cultural weight than Porsche 550 Spyder No.130. James Dean — actor, icon, and genuine motorsport enthusiast — purchased the car in September 1955, having it finished in silver with the race number 130 in red and the name “Little Bastard” lettered on the rear bodywork. He had already competed in smaller Porsches and taken the 550 Spyder seriously as a racing proposition, planning to race it at Salinas, California. He never arrived. On 30 September 1955, near Cholame, the Spyder was struck by a Ford Tudor at a rural intersection and Dean, just 24 years old, was killed — one of the defining moments in the mythology of 1950s American culture.

The Porsche 550A Spyder itself was a remarkable machine entirely separate from its subsequent history — a mid-engined racing car powered by a 1.5-litre flat-four that was capable of class victories at Le Mans, the Targa Florio, and the Carrera Panamericana, its lightweight tubular spaceframe chassis and independently suspended all four corners giving it handling that more powerful cars from larger manufacturers could not match. KK Scale’s 1:12 diecast model captures No.130 at approximately 30cm in length with openable doors, removable seat cover, working wheels, working suspension, and a display plinth.
