Description

On 28 May 1983, Stefan Bellof drove the Rothmans Porsche 956K around the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6 minutes and 11.13 seconds — a lap that has never been officially surpassed on the full circuit and which stands as arguably the most extraordinary single lap in motorsport history. To put it in context: it remains faster than any modern Formula 1 car has lapped the Nordschleife in a timed test. Bellof, the astonishingly gifted young German driver whose career was cut tragically short in 1985, was simply on another level that day, driving the twin-turbocharged 956K at the absolute limit of what was physically possible around 20.8 kilometres of public road turned racing circuit.

Derek Bell, Bellof’s co-driver and one of endurance racing’s greatest ever competitors, has spoken of the awe he felt at what his young team-mate achieved that afternoon. The record is inscribed in the Nordschleife’s history permanently — a monument to a driver who was unlike anything the sport had seen before or since. WERK83’s 1:18 diecast model captures the #2 car exactly as it ran on the day of the record, at approximately 26cm in length with working wheels and display base — one of the most significant models ever produced of one of motorsport’s most significant moments.
