Porsche returned to Le Mans in 1997 with the evolution of its 911 GT1, now wearing a revised nose and headlamps that previewed the forthcoming 996-generation 911, together with new aerodynamics that made it considerably quicker than the 1996 car. Underneath, it retained a steel tube frame combining a 993-based front structure with a 962C-derived rear, and a water-cooled 3.2-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six producing around 600PS through a six-speed sequential gearbox.
The No.25 works car was crewed by Hans-Joachim Stuck, Thierry Boutsen and Bob Wollek, the trio that had finished second overall and won the GT1 class the previous year. Stuck qualified second overall and on class pole with a 3:43.36, and through the night the two factory Porsches ran together at the head of the field, holding a two-lap advantage over the Joest TWR-Porsche and the leading McLaren by 7am. At 7.45am, chased by Yannick Dalmas in the sister car, Wollek went off at Arnage and struck the kerb hard, breaking a driveline joint; the car ground to a halt in the Porsche Curves. The No.26 later caught fire on the Mulsanne Straight, leaving victory to the Joest TWR-Porsche WSC95.
