The 24 Hours of Nürburgring on the full Nordschleife circuit is among the most brutally demanding events in motorsport — over twenty kilometres of narrow, undulating, tree-lined road in which the darkness, the unpredictable weather, and the sheer variety of corner types produce attrition rates that no other circuit can match. The victory of the No. 35 BMW M3 E30 in 1989 was a result achieved by three drivers of exceptional quality: Roberto Ravaglia, who had won the 1987 World Touring Car Championship in the same model of car and understood its limits more precisely than almost anyone alive; Emanuele Pirro, whose smooth, intelligent style was exactly what the Green Hell rewarded; and Fabien Giroix, who completed a line-up of considerable depth and experience.

The E30 M3 was the most successful touring car of its generation — a 2.3-litre four-cylinder car developed for DTM and ETCC competition with a racing precision that belied its production car origins. Winning the Nürburgring 24 Hours against prototype and sports car machinery was a measure of how complete the package was in the hands of drivers who knew how to use it.
