In 1988 Audi of America took the 200 quattro into the SCCA Trans-Am Championship and upended a series built around big American V8s. Its 2.1-litre turbocharged five-cylinder and permanent four-wheel drive gave it traction no rival could match, and with Hans-Joachim Stuck, Walter Röhrl and Hurley Haywood driving, the Audis won eight of the season’s thirteen rounds. Haywood took the drivers’ title and Audi the manufacturers’ championship.
The Cleveland round on 2 July, run over 40 laps of the 2.48-mile Burke Lakefront Airport circuit, was Stuck’s first win of the year. Scott Pruett’s Merkur XR4Ti started from pole and led early on, but Stuck took over in the No.14 car and led from lap 18 to the finish, with team-mate Haywood fourth. It began a run of three consecutive victories for Stuck at Cleveland, Brainerd and the Meadowlands, and the SCCA responded by adding 100lb to the Audis’ minimum weight immediately afterwards.
