Description

The Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth is one of the most celebrated touring cars in British motorsport history. Derived from the road-going Sierra Cosworth, the RS500 variant was developed specifically for homologation racing — featuring a revised turbocharged 2.0-litre Cosworth YBD engine, enlarged intercooler, and additional aerodynamic enhancements that gave factory-backed teams near-unassailable pace in the right conditions. During the late 1980s it rewrote the BTCC rulebook, and its period of dominance remains one of the most discussed chapters in the championship’s history.

Steve Soper was one of the finest touring car racers of his era — methodical, composed, and devastatingly quick when it mattered. His 1988 campaign with the Sierra RS500 at Brands Hatch represents the car at its competitive peak, battling wheel-to-wheel in front of the enormous crowds that the BTCC attracted during its golden age. It’s a specific moment in British motorsport worth commemorating properly.
