Description

The 1976 Swedish Grand Prix at Anderstorp is the most celebrated result in the Tyrrell P34’s racing history — the race in which the six-wheeled car achieved the result that justified Derek Gardner’s unconventional concept in the most complete fashion possible: a 1-2 finish, with Jody Scheckter winning and Patrick Depailler crossing the line in second position to give Tyrrell a dominant formation finish that silenced those who had questioned whether four front wheels could outperform two. Depailler’s No. 4 car running immediately behind his team-mate through the Swedish circuit demonstrated both the P34’s competitive ability and the quality of Tyrrell’s driver line-up in one of the season’s most memorable afternoons.

For Depailler, a driver of considerable flair and commitment whose career would later include a race victory with Ligier, the Swedish result was the high point of his Tyrrell years — a second place in a car that produced one of Formula 1’s most extraordinary race results.
