The MCL40 is McLaren’s 2026 Formula 1 challenger, built to the sweeping new technical regulations that introduce active aerodynamics and a revised power unit formula running on fully sustainable fuels with a higher proportion of electrical energy. Designed and developed at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, the car continues the engineering programme that returned the team to the front of the grid in the previous seasons. It carries the No.1 in recognition of the reigning Drivers’ Champion. The chassis pairs a carbon-fibre monocoque with the latest hybrid power unit, packaged around the tighter dimensional limits and reduced downforce targets of the 2026 ruleset. As the opening flyaway round of the season, the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park provides the first competitive benchmark for the new generation of cars.

At the 2026 Australian Grand Prix, the MCL40 competed against works entries from Ferrari, Mercedes, Red Bull, Aston Martin and the rest of the grid in the first race under the new regulations. The Albert Park street circuit, with its mix of medium-speed corners and long straights, gave teams an early read on chassis balance and energy deployment strategy under the revised power unit rules. The race marked Norris’s first championship defence with the team.
