The MCL40 is McLaren’s 2026 Formula 1 challenger, developed to the sweeping new technical regulations that introduce active aerodynamics and a 50/50 split between internal combustion and electrical power. Designed at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking under technical director Peter Prodromou and his engineering group, the car represents a clean-sheet response to the regulation reset rather than an evolution of the title-winning MCL39. Power comes from a new-generation hybrid unit, with chassis packaging reworked around the revised battery, fuel cell and front-wing concept. The MCL40 carries forward the squad’s role as reigning Constructors’ Champions and forms the platform for the team’s title defence.

At the Barcelona Pre-Season Shakedown, the MCL40 completed its first installation laps as part of a promotional filming day held within the FIA mileage allowance. Shakedown running is used to verify systems, gearbox shifts, hydraulics, electronics and basic aero correlation before the official pre-season test, rather than to set representative lap times. Piastri drove the car alongside team-mate Lando Norris as McLaren introduced the new chassis to the public for the first time, ahead of the proper test programme.
