Description

The McLaren M23 had by 1977 passed from front-running works machine to privateer staple — a testament to the soundness of its design that customer teams continued to field it competitively even as McLaren’s own works effort moved to the newer M26. The M23 had taken Emerson Fittipaldi to the 1974 title and James Hunt to the 1976 championship, making it one of the most successful F1 cars of the decade, and its robust, adaptable character made it attractive to independent entries willing to invest in a proven package.

Hector Rebaque, a wealthy Mexican driver who funded his own Formula 1 programme throughout the late 1970s, entered the No. 49 McLaren M23 at the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen as part of a season spent acquiring experience at the highest level of the sport. The Watkins Glen circuit in upstate New York was one of F1’s most beloved venues through this era, and the US GP attracted a full grid of machinery from the works teams alongside ambitious privateer efforts.
