Description

The Mazda 787B’s victory at the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans is one of the most extraordinary results in the race’s entire history — a win that defied expectation, rewarded years of determined effort, and produced a moment of sporting drama that has only grown in stature in the decades since. Mazda’s rotary-engined challenger, powered by the four-rotor R26B engine producing around 700hp and emitting a spine-tingling wail unlike anything else at La Sarthe, became the first and to this day only Japanese manufacturer to win outright — and the only rotary-engined car ever to do so.

The crew of Volker Weidler, Johnny Herbert, and Bertrand Gachot completed 362 laps in the distinctive Renown-liveried No. 55 car — orange and green, unmistakable, and now iconic. Herbert, who had fought back from career-threatening injuries sustained in a 1988 Formula 3000 accident, produced a drive of exceptional quality and commitment. The victory was Mazda’s reward for nine years of perseverance at Le Mans, and it remains one of the most emotionally resonant results the race has ever produced.

From Spark’s Le Mans Winner Collection, this 2026 new release captures the 787B in its winning specification at approximately 10cm in length, officially licensed and presented with a display case and base.
