Willy Mairesse was among the most daring and emotionally driven drivers of the early 1960s — a Belgian of fearless commitment whose racing style brought him both memorable results and serious injury on multiple occasions. His entry in a Lotus 21 at the 1961 French Grand Prix at Reims placed him in one of the fastest circuits on the calendar in a car that demanded respect and rewarded bravery, both qualities Mairesse possessed in abundance.

The French GP at Reims in 1961 was a high-speed affair where the Ferraris of the time dominated, but privateer Lotus entries like Mairesse’s No. 48 car added texture and drama to a grid that showcased the full breadth of early 1960s Formula 1.
