Description

The South African Grand Prix of 1962, held at the East London circuit, was at that time a non-championship Formula 1 event — a race that nonetheless attracted serious machinery and drivers, and which holds a special place in the history of South African motorsport. Ernie Pieterse was one of the prominent local drivers of the era, and his Lotus 21 — the car that had been Jim Clark and Stirling Moss’s weapon of choice in 1961 — represented competitive, up-to-date machinery for a privateer of the period.

The Lotus 21 was Colin Chapman’s evolution of the 18, featuring a lower, sleeker body and improved aerodynamics that helped make it one of the most competitive cars of the 1961 season. By 1962 it was transitioning to privateer hands, allowing drivers like Pieterse to compete at the sharp end of national and international events. Spark’s 1:43 resin model captures this piece of South African and Formula 1 history at approximately 10cm in length, presented with a display case and base.
