The Lamborghini Murciélago R-GT brought the visceral character of Sant’Agata’s most extreme production car to GT endurance racing — a programme that adapted the Murciélago’s V12 architecture for competition and placed it in a field dominated by the established GT1 machinery from Ferrari, Aston Martin, and the major German manufacturers. The No. 53 entry at the 2006 Le Mans 24 Hours was a testament to the international reach of the world’s greatest endurance race, fielding an all-Japanese driver line-up of Koji Yamigiwa, Yasutaka Hinoi, and Masahiro Kimoto in a Lamborghini that combined Italian supercar drama with Japanese privateer ambition across the full 24-hour distance at the Circuit de la Sarthe.
