Description

The Arrows A6 was the 1983 evolution of a car that had been competitive but rarely spectacular — a description that suited much of Arrows’ existence as a mid-grid British constructor that could usually be relied upon to run reliably, score points, and provide a professional environment for its drivers. The 1983 season was one of the last in which naturally aspirated DFV-powered cars remained genuinely competitive before turbocharged engines became dominant, and the A6 was among the stronger normally-aspirated entries in that transitional year.

Marc Surer was a technically precise Swiss driver whose calm analytical approach made him well suited to developing a racing car, and his feedback contributed meaningfully to Arrows’ work during this period. The Canadian Grand Prix at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montréal — a street circuit favouring mechanical grip and braking stability over outright aerodynamic downforce — provided a different kind of challenge to the European rounds.
