Description

The Tyrrell 009 marked a new chapter for Ken Tyrrell’s team following the bold but ultimately short-lived experiment of the six-wheeled P34. Returning to a conventional four-wheel layout for 1979, the 009 was penned by Maurice Phillipe and powered by the ubiquitous Ford Cosworth DFV — a clean, competitive package that gave Tyrrell’s drivers a genuine tool to fight with in the upper midfield.

Didier Pironi, the gifted and ambitious French driver who would go on to challenge for the world championship with Ferrari in 1982, was one of Tyrrell’s key assets in 1979. At the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos — a race won by Jacques Laffite’s dominant Ligier JS11 — Pironi brought the No. 3 Tyrrell home in fourth place, a solid points finish that demonstrated both the car’s competitiveness and his own considerable talent.
